Rubrics have been heralded as the answer to any number of assessment and accountability questions facing faculty and administrators. However, sometimes when the language of accreditation and compliance takes precedence over faculty values, the assessment process can become a mechanical, reductionist exercise. AAC&U’s VALUE (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education) approach to assessment was developed to provide a collaborative, faculty-devised, and faculty-influenced approach to assessing the quality of student learning on outcomes that educators and employers agree are essential for student success.
Workshop participants will be empowered to utilize the VALUE suite of rubrics in their institutions, programs, or classrooms through a discussion on rubric best practices and resources for using the VALUE rubrics in ways that best fit their context. During this workshop, participants will begin modifying and customizing VALUE rubrics for multiple purposes, such as to align with an institution’s specific context or for use when grading. Overall, this workshop will delve into how we design our assessment practices for meaningful and impactful assessment, including strategies for measuring student learning and using the resulting data to inform decision-making, altogether serving to underscore the critical connections among teaching, learning, and assessment.
